3 Independent Brands for Wardrobe Basics
Written by Nisha Momin
For those of us living in 4-season climates, maintaining a chic and weather-friendly wardrobe can be a challenge. From 90 degree summers to below-freezing winters, I find myself wanting to freshen up my wardrobe each year. Over the years, I’ve learned that investing in solid timeless basics for each season helps keep my wardrobe ready for when the weather changes. Things like quality wife-beaters, turtlenecks, and well-fitting jeans are some of my favorites. Here are a few independent brands that I’ve been loving for these types of garments:
California-based brand, the Line by K never fails me- from summer to winter. The designs are basic but with a signature pleated flare. Personally, I love their two-piece skirt and tank sets that can be paired together for a more formal summer look, or separately with jeans in the spring. As a 5’ 3” human, I struggle to find turtle necks that are just the right length for my neck and torso and I am happy to say Ks hit the mark perfectly.
Shoutout to the friend that put me on to this one - I am forever grateful. Rollas is an Australian-based brand that makes the best corduroy I have ever tried on and they come at a decent price point. They come in a variety of colors and fits - a 28” inseam for us petite humans- and hit the vintage nerve super well. They also do denim, vests, skirts, dresses, and more! They even did a collection in collaboration with our favorite mermaid-werewolf, Pheobe Tonkin. Side bar- they have fantastic customer service.
This New York based brand is one for your less casual wardrobe with pieces that I consider very versatile depending on how you style them. The garments are designed to stand on their own meaning the can be paired as a set or separately and dressed-up or down. The black pleated cardigan is my go-to for a nice dinner or easy evening look during all four seasons. I have paired it with jeans, over sleeveless dresses, on its own, and with a tank underneath.
